Clare and her family lost a loved one a couple of weeks ago. He was a handsome little man, a real charmer. I first met him in 2007 when I stopped in to see Clare. You see, Clare and I have been friends since 1999, and I was in town visiting. Clare is one of those people with a magnetic personality- once you meet her, you are forever changed… and you just know you have made a friend for life. And Toby? Well, it figures that he kind of made that same impression…
Toby- what a proper little guy,
He was cute and a tad bit shy.
Out through the door he would go,
Every neighbor’s little beau.
Being angry at Toby was hard,
Even when he snuck out of the yard.
In our hearts he will forever be,
This is my ode to sweet little Toby!
Yes… Toby was one of Clare’s dear doggie family members. He has gone to the giant dog park in the sky. He had only been ill a short time, and he died peacefully at home, on the kitchen floor. Just Clare’s text telling me that Toby had died reminded me of all the wonderful dogs that I have had who are now in that eternal dog park in the sky (and yes, there are two of my horses, and a couple ponies from my youth… a few baby birds, a Holstein calf, more than a few dogs, a handful of cats, and more rabbits than I can count…and a pot belly pig- a story for another time). I believe they are all in God’s petting zoo… right next to the dog park.
Our pets are part of our family because they have a way of loving us unconditionally. They don’t care if our house is a mess, and they are always happy to see us when we walk in the door (whether it has been five minutes or five hours since they last saw us). They love us on our worst days, and they celebrate with us on our best days…
Toby will be sadly missed by his family and all those who enjoyed the good fortune of meeting him. One tail wag, one bark… forever in our hearts.
Thanks, Tamara, for that sweet tribute to Toby! Toby was our “Fat Boy” (Dachshund) that held such a special place in our hearts for 13 years!
So, I know I don’t need to remind you to please give your “pets” a hug today and show them how much you love them and appreciate their companionship and unconditional love!
