Fear Not

The phrase “fear not” may be one of the most repeated commands in the Bible.  Some commentaries have said “Do not be afraid” is written in the Bible 365 times!  That’s a daily reminder to not be afraid…. and some days, I need all 365 times that it is referenced – for just that one day!

What are some of the synonyms for being “unafraid”?  Some definitions are: “courageous,” “bold,” “confident,” unworried,” and “brave.”  I can promise you a lot of days I do not feel bold and courageous, not by a longshot.

But, I have to lean on and rely on God’s Word for daily survival.  The Word is my daily guidance for getting through the most difficult days.

We see when God was ready to bring His people into the Promised Land in Deuteronomy 31:

Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you.  He will not fail you or forsake you.

Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him the sight of all Israel, Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land where the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.

And the Lord is the one who goes ahead of you, He will not fail you or forsake you.  Do not fear, or be dismayed.”  (Deuteronomy 31:6 – 8 NAS)

We’re told more than once – specifically, two times in these few verses to “Be strong and courageous”… and it even wraps up with “Do not fear…”.  I don’t know about you, but I surely need this encouragement and this proclamation daily…. several times a day!

God used Joshua to take the people into the Promised Land.  We see the victory and the possession of the land.  We read in the first chapter of Joshua:

Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

Only be strong and very courageous be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant has commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.

Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous!  Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  (Joshua 1:6; 7; 9 – NAS)

We are told three times right here to “Be strong and courageous”!

Isaiah shares, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  (Isaiah 41:10 ESV)

I hope I can learn to be strong, fear not and take courage…. but, truthfully, many days I fall way short of that.  And on those days I can’t be fearless and courageous, I will lean on the Lord and His wonderful Word.

Please be blessed this week ~ and be courageous ~ God is with you!
