God’s Little Reminders Not to Take Ourselves Too Seriously

, / 10

We all have those times in life that we look back on and laugh… although if we think back to it, we probably could have died of embarrassment. I guess I tend to look at these as “God’s little reminders not to take ourselves too seriously”.  Sometimes these “little reminders” occur around times I may have been too focused on myself, or maybe when I was just being a little bit too full of myself.  At other times, I think God just knew I was under a little too much stress, and I needed a good dose of laughter.  I am guessing that a few of you can relate to at least one of these “oh-so-humbling” experiences…And we’ve all heard the age old saying “laughter is good for the soul”, and I surely believe it is true.

Beverly & Pokey

Many years ago, as I was getting ready to sell my home,  I hired my friend, Beverly, to paint inside.  While I was gone at work, Beverly would often have to bring our dog “Pokey” in and out back (which the back yard was fenced in).  And, Bev, was a little scared of Pokey (who looked a little bit like a wolf).   Sometimes, though, if someone would leave the “side gate” open by accident, Pokey would get out and roam the streets…. until a family member brought her home.

One day when I got home from work, Beverly shared her story, “Clare, I saw Pokey out front.  I certainly panicked.  I grabbed some cold cuts from the refrig and persuaded her with the “treat” to come back inside.  I got her inside.  After a few minutes, I looked outside, and I saw POKEY… AGAIN!  I said, “wait a minute – I looked down at the dog beside me, and I HAD DRAGGED IN THE WRONG DOG IN YOUR HOUSE!!!!!!”   I scrambled and let that dog out …. and persuaded the ‘real Pokey’ to come inside!!!!”  We still howl with laughter at family gatherings of this story of our dear sweet Pokey….  who has since gone home to “doggy heaven.”

And so it goes.  I hope you got a good chuckle!   You will be seeing more of “God’s little reminders not to take ourselves too seriously” … Hope this brightens your week!

Bye for now…

  • Love this! I think we all need a reminder now and then not to take ourselves too seriously. This story reminds me of the time that our family dog jumped out an open window while we were gone. As we were driving up to the house we were like “That dog looks like Shadow. Oh wait.. that IS Shadow!” The screen needed replaced but we were thankful our sweet dog was ok and that we found her. Thanks for sharing your story!
