I don’t know about you, but I often feel like I need someone to watch over me, guard me, “keep” me…. I used to look to my beloved parents to do that for me…. and they did – unselfishly for many, many years. They have now since gone on to be with the Lord. As a Christian, though, I must believe that when I feel frantic, scared, or helpless, there is someone watching out for me – “keeping me” and protecting me – and that’s the Lord!
Psalm 121 states:
“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From whence shall my help come?
My help comes from the Lord;
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to slip;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not smite you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in,
From this time forth and forever.”
(Psalm 121:1-8; NAS)
Look at the many times the words “help”, “keep” and “guard” are mentioned in this Psalm. Do we think the Lord means it? I do – for sure.
Some synonyms for “help” are to “make easier”, “assist” or “improve”. God does that for us!!
The word “keep” has the meaning of “to hold for a period of time,” “to maintain,” i.e. like a promise, “to keep watch.”
Other meanings for the word “guard” means to “watch over”; “to keep from harm or danger”, or “protect.”
I know that without a doubt that I need God’s protection every moment of the day, and I have a promise from His Word that He keeps us, watches over us, and protects us. And, I know that He does this for my family, too!
I am praying for this Psalm to be real in your life also – and praying for God’s protection over you and your family.
May many, may blessings be upon you and yours!
