Hot Fun in the Summertime

I keep hearing this song play over again and again in my head:

“End of the spring and here she comes back,
Hi, hi, hi, hi, there
Them summer days, those summer days….
Hot fun in the summertime
Hot fun in the summertime.”

(“Hot Fun In The Summertime” – Sly & the Family Stone)

Sly and the Family Stone hit it dead on! I’m a grownup… but I STILL love summertime!

I have fond memories of summers growing up in New Jersey. We were “outdoors kids” back then. We played ALL day running through the neighborhood, woods, brooks and streams. Our moms were not worried where we were because they knew we were safe. We built treehouses in our back yards, fell out of trees (and lived to tell about it), played “Kick the Can”, rode our bikes, played baseball, went swimming and stayed outside all day until our Mom rang the dinner bell.

We swam in neighbors’ pools (both the Hanlon’s and Allocco’s pools). My older sister, Carol, would win the treading water contest – she treaded water for 60 minutes! And the joke was, my mom and Mrs. Allocco would be our lifeguards, but neither one of them knew how to swim!
Those were the days! And I loved summer!

When we were teenagers, we swam at the New Providence (New Jersey) Community Pool and hung out all day with our friends. We went to dances in bare feet and …. WAIT FOR IT… wore bell bottoms and tie dye shirts. (Sometimes we would wear “halter tops” if we could get out the door before our fathers saw us!) Yeah, those were the 70’s, dear friends!!!! And then of course, the Jersey Shore – day trips to Asbury Park, Point Pleasant, and two weeks each summer down to Lavallette Beach.

Fast forward…. Years later, raising our two daughters in Florida! I loved, loved, loved it when the kids were out of school for the summer – what a nice break from the hustle and bustle of schedules, homework, getting them ready for school, lunches, early mornings, and early bedtimes.

And we would always try to take our kids on vacation in the summer to somewhere special, even if it was just for a few days. I have fond memories of Disney World, Sea World, Ormond Beach, Panama City, and St. Petersburg, Florida…. and the list goes on and on. Special memories of the beach, pools, amusement parks, shopping, and more! One of our favorite summer getaways was very close to home … Summer Waves Water Park in Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Now years later, our girls are adults themselves and guess what?? You guessed it! I have a grandson now, Conrad, and the fun is ready to begin again!

And it is HOT, HOT, HOT already as we start our Florida summer!
But I still love summer. I love that feeling in my heart that it’s just a different season, and I can breathe and let my guard down a little bit. I feel a bit freer in the summer for some reason.
And I love having time and R&R at my sister’s pool, too.

Hopefully, with a little luck, I will get up early in the morning and get out on the beach at least a couple of times. I love just putting my feet in the water and catching my breath.

Even if you don’t live near the beach, I hope you find something to really enjoy this summer because it goes by much too quickly! And don’t forget your sunscreen…

Until next time –

Your Beach Buddy.

I may not live on your side of the country, but I can relate in so many ways to all the summer love! I have a little one now and it’s fun starting to teach her my summer traditions. Although they mostly consist of eating watermelon and then sitting in a pool… she is starting to get the hang of it!

  • Leigh says:

I love summer. We spend time with the family, hang out at the neighborhood pool, and delve into all those craft projects and books we don’t have time for during the school year. We hit the drive-in movie last week, have VBS next week, and are heading to the grandparents for fireworks and family time soon. We do more of our camping and outdoor stuff in the fall and spring when it’s not so hot, but later this summer we’re going to visit a petrified forest and a Civil War battlefield. And today we’re experimenting with making fossils. 🙂

  • Clare says:

Wow, Leigh! It does sound like you and your family are quite busy and enjoy the summers! Glad you are keeping the kids busy and yet you also sound like you love it too which is great – My kids have fond memories of Vacation Bible School! Thanks for sharing your summertime fun activities with us! Have fun! 🙂
