The Good Ol’ Days of Winter Fun

, / 15

Hello, I am sitting here and it’s February…. more than halfway through the winter, and I just want to say … “I hate winter!”  Yes, I do! Am I whining?  Maybe, but I bet a lot of you feel the same way.  I even feel that way living in “Sunny” Florida, but I can tell you even though we may not have 20° weather like some areas of the country, we have had plenty of winters with gloomy, dreary and chilly, rainy weather!  Ugh, and it puts me in a depressed and gloomy mood.  See my recent blog post on “The Winter Blues”.

I must say, I hate winter….. but I do have fond memories of growing up in New Jersey, ice skating on our neighbor’s pond – just us neighborhood kids – and we had the pond to ourselves.  One year our buddy, Sharon, fell in – but we thankfully scooped her out!

Although I will say it again (I hate winter) … I also have fond memories of skating all day on Maple Street and doing the “whip” where we kids joined hands and pulled and swung each other in a train…. Yikes, the person on the end was “whipped” around like a belt!

And yet again, I must say, I hate winter…. but I have fond memories of sleigh riding on sleds down “The Path” – which was right down the street from us – a very steep path that went straight down the hill through the woods!

Have I told you, I hate winter? … But I loved those childhood memories of us sleigh riding down the hill at my dad’s work (Allstate).  It was so much fun!

Yes, I hate winter, but I do have fond memories of us being at the top of “The Path” and throwing snowballs at cars and escaping flying down the path on our sleds.  Well, I must admit once or twice we got caught at the bottom of the Path….. but we survived it!

Again, have I shared that I hate winter? … But I have fond memories of having a white Christmas, and after the family all left – going outside and walking in the snow in the front yard.  It was glorious!

I must say, I hate winter…. But, I have fond memories of Sunday dinners, my mom would make spaghetti and meatballs – her meatballs were to die for – and then Dad and I would stumble into the living room and watch TV all afternoon in front of a cozy fire.

Wait – have I told you that I hate winter? …. And, I DON’T miss snow anymore and so glad I live in “Sunny Florida”, but I sure miss those snow days – days off from school due to the snow!  When it snowed piles and piles – we would swing open our front door at 7:00 a.m. to hear the glorious sound of our Fire Department’s siren!  When the siren rang, that meant a snow day!

It was fun growing up in the snow and cold back then… with the snow glistening so white, going outside and building snowmen and “igloos” where we actually packed so much snow we made a little house and could crawl in it!

Then as I got a little older, dealing with clearing our front steps and driveway of snow….. scraping the ice off our cars and hoping our cars started ….. trying to drive to school or work ….. And once the city comes through and puts salt and gravel down on the roads, and plows the streets,  the snow doesn’t appear quite so “pretty” any more.

I hate winter…. But I will choose to remember the “good ol’ winter days” of growing up in New Jersey and playing outside all day, sleigh riding and ice skating!  Crisp, fresh air and playing with the neighborhood kids all day!

I had a dream the other night…. I was 10 years old, it was 7:00 a.m.  and the town fire department’s siren went off!  Snow day – no school!

Oh, childhood was so much simpler back then… in the good ol’ days of winter fun.

I love this! I’m an odd person and I LOVE winter, for a lot of the reasons you mention in this post. I grew up in New England, so it’s all very nostalgic for me. But I also just love the cold and hate the heat.

What a fun walk down memory lane. I grew up in Hawaii so moving to NC for college and now living here has definitely been an adjustment, esp. in winter. But I have started to make fun snow day traditions with my husband and I always enjoy being snowed in…for one day. Anything beyond one day is terrible.

    • Clare says:

Aw – so glad you liked the post, Becki! I love North Carolina – what little I have seen of it and I have a brother in NC. It’s a beautiful state – and glad you are making fun wintertime traditions – enjoy!
